The original Ionia County Jail was built in 1844. It was a small, one-story building located on the corner of Main Street and State Street in the city of Ionia. The jail was made of wood and was not very secure.
In 1875, the jail was replaced with a new, two-story building. The new jail was made of brick and was more secure than the old jail. It had 16 cells for prisoners.
The New Jail
In 1985, the county commissioners approved the construction of a new jail. The new jail was built on a 10-acre site on the outskirts of the city of Ionia. The jail was completed in 1987 and opened in January 1988.
The new jail is a modern, state-of-the-art facility. It has 256 beds and houses both male and female prisoners. The jail also has a medical unit, a mental health unit, and a visiting room.
